Knowing temperament type is a powerful tool. Extroversion and introversion are but two of the components that make up the profile.

Extroverts run the risk of speaking before thinking. The talk, think, talk syndrome can get them in trouble when they blurt out a reaction or are too quick with a reply. Encouraging an extrovert to silently play through their response can be an enormous buffer to their natural inclination. Teams that have a mix of introverts and extroverts do best, provided the extroverts allow the introverts time to think before they speak and the introverts don’t dismiss extrovert comments and calls for action as bravado or stealing the limelight.
At the end of the day’s program there would be a break before dinner (another wild celebration). The extroverts would travel to the bar or lobby and with great animation, and much debate, talk the day’s events out. The introverts ran to their rooms for cover and to recover. Both groups were then refreshed for the next segment of the evening.
I could always spot the introverts. They often sat in the back of the room,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], generally with the other introverts, many of whom were top management, IT people, and the accountants. When the noise level rose, they covered their ears or took copious notes for distraction. They would sneak out to the restroom for a reprieve. Not that they weren’t interested or excited it was the others’ expression of it that was literally wearing them out.
In my corporate experience, it was easiest to identify the extroverts when we had our annual sales meeting. To begin with, most of the attendees were line managers who dealt with the public and large staffs all day, every day. They talked, directed, cajoled, and paroled their entire workday. The sales floor was their stage; ideal for most extroverts. Gather hundreds of them in a ballroom and you’d have a deafening noise level, people standing on chairs yelling with an enthusiasm that only escalated as the program progressed. The biggest agenda mistake anyone could make was to have a financial update (on a long PowerPoint deck, no less) or some other form of operations mandate, midday. Listening was not this group’s forte and when they were revved, they didn’t want to give it up.
In contemporary psychological terms, “extrovert” is used to describe a individuals whose temperament type or preference directs and receives their energy from external sources. In the practical sense,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they are action people who plug into others for their juice. They’re not generally drawn to reflection, they are “doers.” Talking things out is an extrovert’s way of understanding, solving problems, reducing stress, sharing, and communicating. I am less likely to say to myself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “what are they really thinking?” when working with an extrovert. These individuals prefer, and work well in, group projects. They can be visible leaders because they easily tolerate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in fact often enjoy, attention. They represent between 60 -70% of the population,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though they are more prevalent in certain professions such as sales,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], teaching, and corporate middle management. Some famous extroverts are Bill Clinton (Hillary is an introvert), Ronald Regan (Nancy is an introvert),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Steve Martin (no idea who his partner is), and Mark Twain (ditto), Sam Walton was an extrovert, and Warren Buffet is an introvert. You get the picture.
How would you type yourself? Your Boss? Your employees and coworkers?
What would be the best role for the extroverts on your team?
In times of change or stress, who should do what, when?
If you are picking your “Dream Team,” who would be the extrovert you would draft, and what role would he or she play?
In the workplace, extroverted bosses will pull together their staff for group meetings, advocate for a bullpen office layout, place their desks in the center, or face their workstation looking out at “the troops.” Talking to all levels will get them the energy and information they need. Employees will generally know where they stand with an extroverted leader, though they may not always be thrilled with the directness and sometimes see their manager as aggressive or gruff. An extroverted boss will be quick to initiate change, want action “now,” and ask you to plunge into the work, especially if he/she senses demands from outside their area. “Keep me posted,” “Let’s talk it out,” “Take a big picture view of it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” will be expressions of the need for the individual as much as the requirements of the work. Isolate and the extrovert will think something is wrong. They will attempt to pull you out or distract you. “The silent treatment” can be torture for an extrovert and a devise that should be used sparingly by those who want their way.
Extroverts appear to rule the world (they are the majority) and play an important role in any organization. They’re often misunderstood by those less extroverted or by introverts. Allowed to express and draw energy can have a very positive effect on the workplace. Misplaced or misused,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they can use their outward focus for negativity and sabotage.

If you have extroverts working for you, you’ll see them more often than your introverts. They’ll “stop by” and “check-in” sometimes just to draw a bit of energy from you. Input and weigh-in are important to extroverts, so it’s essential you ask them their take; outside opinions are generally sought and welcomed. They will press you to state your position, even if you admit you need to “think it over.” You’ll know more personal information about your extroverted employee. To get more comfortable with your own legitimate power, turn to the natural world. In every herd of horses, there is a dominant horse, the horse recognized to be “in charge.” This horse is always a mare,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], commonly called the “alpha mare.” Her duty is to tend to the safety and well being of the entire herd, to signal the entire herd when to move, sleep, eat, drink, or run for safety. She frequently disciplines unruly youngsters, teaching them respectful behavior. The alpha mare has a great responsibility and the herd depends on her to make wise choices and enforce reasonable rules. The entire herd looks to her for leadership, structure and discipline.
How can we be more like the wise alpha mares? We can begin with accepting and embracing our own personal power as a gift, a talent and an honor. We can shift our perception of power from negative to positive, seeing our ability to use power for good, and letting go of the fear of what others think of us.

In so many situations, we come face to face with the reality that we have given away our genuine power, settled for someone else’s version of what we should or shouldn’t do, behaving as though we have no choice.

In the last ten years of working almost exclusively with women, one of the themes I’ve noticed is how uncomfortable many women are with the issue of power. For a variety of reasons, power pushes women’s emotional buttons.
I doubt that alpha mares are squirming over their very legitimate power,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wondering what the other horses think of them, feeling uncomfortable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or trying to avoid or give away their power. Through the laws of nature they step comfortably into their roles as alpha mares. If they do not lead with confident, legitimate power, their herd can suffer grave consequences.
For another equine example of appropriate power,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], look at female equestrians. Pair up a 125 pound woman with a 1200 pound horse and the woman’s appropriate use of power becomes critical. The rider must be in charge or serious injury can result. Being in charge does not mean being abusive, cruel or domineering. In fact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it means just the opposite. Through the gentle, consistent use of boundaries, alignment, timing, and learning to communicate in the horses’ language, a woman’s power can be used to direct and channel the horse’s energy into a magnificent display of teamwork, cooperation and athletic ability.
As business leaders our power can be used to create jobs, to facilitate teamwork, to inspire, to foster creativity, to improve our communities. We have the power to help our employees learn and grow, to discover their talents and pursue their dreams. We have the power to influence others, to lead others to achieve what they might not accomplish otherwise.
I wonder if we don’t feel comfortable or capable of exerting authority. Maybe we don’t feel we deserve to. Sometimes we just don’t want to rock the boat. We don’t want to be seen as demanding or hard to please. We most definitely don’t want to be seen as a shrew. Underneath, we’re afraid of what others might think of us. For many women,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the opposite of power may not be powerless -- it may be fear.
I’ve seen women walking on eggshells with their staff, or nearly held hostage by employees, fearful of articulating responsibility and expecting accountability. I’ve seen women make excuses for employees who do not live up to expectations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], don’t produce enough, or simply do mediocre work while the company suffers and the bar gets lowered for everyone on the team.
Think about the power of Rosa Parks who, in making her decision to not move to the back of the bus, changed the course of the world. Think about the power of Oprah Winfrey to inspire women to live their dreams. Think about the power of Mary Ellen Sheets, the founder of Two Men and a Truck, who has built a successful franchise business,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], creating opportunities for hundreds of people to own their own business.
Maybe we can all agree on just one principle: power isn’t bad -- abuse of power is. It’s quite an honor to be the alpha mare. How can we embrace that power use our power for good?
But if power is bad, then what explains our reaction to the word powerless? Does anyone aspire to being powerless?
As women leaders, we want to be seen as understanding,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fair and compassionate. That’s great, as long as we are not abdicating or avoiding our appropriate and legitimate power out of fear of what others might think or say. When we abdicate our power we create a vacuum of leadership, without recognizing that our team members and staff would respect a more assertive, confident position.
For many women I suspect the word power has a negative connotation. When we notice issues of power in movies, literature, television, or in the news the dynamics of power are dramatized or heightened, and only noticed because power is overused,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], misused or abused. When power is appropriately used,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it’s often invisible.
